Split decision for WRHS soccer teams Thursday

Girls win 4-1, boys fall 1-0

It was a successful week of home games for the Wood River High School girls’ varsity soccer team, and a tough week playing away from home for the Wolverine boys.

The Wolverine girls built a 4-1 lead in the first half of Thursday’s home non-conference game against the Bonneville Bees and made that score stand up for their second straight home win this week.

Wood River (2-1-0) got goals from Ashley Carnduff, Jesse Cole, Olivia Thornton and Emily Thayer in its victory at South Valley Sports Complex soccer field in Hailey. On Tuesday, the girls blanked the Madison Bobcats 1-0 at home.

Meanwhile, the Wood River boys (1-2-0) dropped a 1-0 road game in Idaho Falls to the unbeaten Bonneville Bees (3-0-0). Bonneville’s Mikey Garcia scored on a breakaway in the 48th minute after the teams played scoreless before half.

The Wolverine boys had fallen 3-2 to Madison at Rexburg last Tuesday.

Wood River’s teams will play again Thursday, Sept. 4 in their Great Basin Conference opening league games.

The Hailey boys’ varsity hosts Minico (0-3-1), a team that has lost 2-0 to Bonneville and Preston, fallen 6-0 at Hillcrest and tied American Falls 1-1.

The Wolverine girls travel to Rupert to play the Spartans—8-0, 12-0 and 11-0 losers to Bonneville, Preston and Hillcrest.

Girls win 4-1 over Bees

After beating Madison 1-0 with an early goal Tuesday on the Hailey pitch, coach Doug Stouffer’s Wolverines started well again against Bonneville.

Ashley Carnduff scored with a penalty kick in the 12th minute after Lucy Brannon was taken down in the penalty area.

Last year’s top scorer Jesse Cole tallied her first goal in the 26th minute, assisted by Olivia Thornton. Bonneville took advantage of a Wood River defensive mistake and cut its deficit to 2-1 in the 28th minute.

Thornton extended the lead to 3-1, assisted by Jesse Cole, in the 30th minute. Just before half, Samantha Sutton made a pass that freshman Emily Thayer converted into her first-ever varsity goal and a 4-1 lead.

Stouffer said, “There was no scoring in the second half but Wood River had some chances. Bonneville looked a little too tired to put any attacking pressure on the girls after half.”

He added, “Wood River came out of the gate a little shaky at the whistle. Any touch on the ball or through passes were just not crisp enough to blow the game wide open.

“After the first 20 minutes, the girls seem to settle in and connected some passes in a more purposeful manner. We now have put together a couple of wins together going into our district games.”

Two days after falling 3-2 to Madison in Rexburg, the Wood River boys met their match in the 1-0 loss to a good Bonneville Bees squad that had started its season winning 2-0 at Minico and 3-2 at Blackfoot.

Wood River coach Luis Monjaras said, “Bonneville scored on a breakaway down the left flank and a long shot to the right low post.

“After a great start to the season (a 3-0 home victory over Highland Aug. 23), the last two road games have been tough and a great learning experience to correct and improve heading into the district games next week.

“Our defense has performed well and our offense needs to improve.”
