SVSEF adds Nate Farrell to snowboard staff

Replacing Jacob Tyler

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation’s snowboard program has turned a new direction with the addition of Nate Farrell to its staff.

Andy Ware, program director for the SVSEF snowboard and freestyle teams, announced Monday that Nate Farrell, 29, will join the staff as head coach of the competitive travel team, taking over for longtime coach Jacob Tyler. Tyler coached for 10 years with the SVSEF.

In a press release, the SVSEF quoted Ware as saying, “We are really excited to have Nate join the coaching staff.  He brings a ton of competition experience at the highest level of the sport.

“His high energy and enthusiasm will be great for our rising snowboard athletes who are eager to follow in the footsteps of Kaitlyn Farrington.”

Hailing from Southern Vermont, Farrell grew up riding at Bromley and Stratton and graduated from Stratton Mountain School in 2002, coincidentally, in the same class as SVSEF alpine coach Erika Hogan.

A professional competitor from age 16, Farrell consistently finished in the top 10 in Grand Prix, Burton Open, and Vans Triple Crown series in halfpipe and slopestyle. He began spending summers at Mt. Hood where he coached at Windell’s snowboard camp from 2001-07.

“We were with the kids 24-7, so that experience will be helpful when we travel,” Farrell said.

Farrell moved to Ketchum in 2011 with his wife, Brittany, and for three years has been Snowboard Promotions Manager at Smith Optics. He said he is excited to return to coaching.

“I’m really looking forward to being a part of the SVSEF,” he said in the press release. “It’s important to me to keep the sport of snowboarding thriving in this community and I can’t wait to be on snow with our talented riders.”

SVSEF’s talented riders are a credit to former head coach Tyler.

He helped shape the skills and influenced the careers of riders like Olympic gold medalist Kaitlyn Farrington, U.S. Pro Teamer Chase Josey, Yancy Caldwell, Spencer Cordovano and Bobby Flanigan.

“Jacob has had a major impact on snowboard athletes in this community. His calm leadership and wealth of knowledge helped many local riders become very successful snowboarders and, more importantly, incredible human beings,” Ware said.

Invited by U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association to coach at its Project Gold Camp earlier this summer, Tyler had a hand in three of the SVSEF’s up-and-coming riders, Payton Bacca, Cora Kaiser and Clara Jenner, earning invitations to train at the exclusive camps.

Former SVSEF snowboard program director Andy Gilbert said about Tyler, “He always had a way of getting athletes to focus and bring their best to every event or training session.”
