Nearly 300 mountain bikers took off from Ketchum Town Square early Sunday morning and competed in the second annual “Rebecca’s Private Idaho” road/trail ride hosted by mountain bike racing champion Rebecca Rusch of Ketchum.

Cyclists rode out Trail Creek Road past Sun Valley and over Trail Creek Summit into the Pioneer Mountains and Copper Basin—returning to Town Square. Distances were the long 93.1-mile Big Potato deep into the Pioneers and a 56-mile Small Fry course into Wild Horse Creek Canyon.

There were 171 racers finishing the Big Potato (118 last year) and 104 doing the new Small Fry course.

Wood River Valley racer Josh Berry, 24, of Team SmartStop won the men’s Big Potato race in 4.40:34. The 2013 Whit Henry Galena Grinder king placed fourth in the USA Cycling Marathon Mountain Bike nationals July 5 on Baldy.

Berry won by 31 seconds over 12-year professional cyclist Robbie Ventura, 43, of Vision Quest Coaching, who raced for the U.S. Postal Service Team from 2001-04. Ventura was an All-American cyclist at Lake Forest College in Illinois and skated for the Lake Forest men’s hockey team.

The women’s Big Potato queen was reigning Idaho state time trial and road race champion Sarah Barber, 38, of Boise in 5.23:38. It’s been a good season for Barber, who also won the St. Luke’s Idaho criterium and competed in the Redlands and Cascade Bike Classics.

King and Queen of the Mountain winners were Neil Shirley, 36, of Newhall, Ca. and Kathryn Bertine, 39, of Saint Kitts and Nevis. She’s a pro racer for Wiggle-Honda, a former national time trial/road race champ and filmmaker out of Colgate University.

Winning Sunday’s Small Fry races were Patti Schmidt-Iverson of Hampton, Minn. (3.03:51) and Austin McInerny, 47, of Berkeley, Ca. (2.46:07). McInerny finished 44 seconds ahead of runner-up Zeb Stroebel-Haft of Hailey (2.46:51).

McInerny is a longtime proponent of youth mountain bike racing, passionate about develop biking into a mainstream high school sport in the U.S.

Former coach of the Berkeley High School mountain bike team, McInerny is executive director of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, a youth development organization governing U.S. high school mountain biking.
