Looking sharp and executing well on both sides of the ball, the Carey High School eight-man football team opened its season Friday with a 38-6 home victory over the Notus Pirates at Derrick Parke Memorial Field in Carey.

Senior quarterback and linebacker Nate Adamson led the Panther charge by scoring three touchdowns on runs of 28, 16 and 84 yards, and tossing a 29-yard touchdown pass to junior end Joe Parke. Adamson and Collin Whitby had nine tackles each on defense.

Carey, seeking its first win over Notus in 20 years, grabbed an early 16-0 lead and extended it to 24-0 on its longest drive of the game—a 10-play, 76-yard grinder that Adamson finished with his scoring strike to Parke late in the second period.

Carey outgained Notus 422-191 with Adamson racking up 300 all-purpose yards through running and passing. His main target was Parke, who caught four passes for 81 yards.

The Panthers (1-0) were particularly successful on third-down plays (4-for-7), scoring three of their first four touchdowns on third down. On offense Carey was balanced with 244 rushing yards, 116 via the pass and 73 on returns.

Adamson’s 84-yard scoring run came early in the third quarter on a third-and-24, on a quarterback keeper up the middle. He swung to the outside and outran all the Pirates for a 32-6 Panther cushion.

The supporting cast for Carey was effective, tackling and pursuing the ball well. Sophomore Parker Gamino had two sacks and six tackles. Senior Corban Johnson added six tackles, while sophomore Derrick Baird and freshman Hilario Ruiz added five tackles.

Ruiz, an energetic 5-6, 125-pounder, was fearless in his first varsity appearance. He ran the ball four times for 26 yards and made a five-yard sack. But he suffered a ruptured spleen making a hard tackle with 25 seconds left in the game and needed to be taken to the hospital in Boise.

Carey plays next against the North Gem Cowboys (0-1) at Bancroft Friday, Sept. 5 at 2:30 p.m. (junior varsity) and 4 p.m. (varsity). North Gem lost its opener Friday 22-6 at Grace.

The Panthers entertain Rockland for Homecoming on Friday, Sept. 12.
