Now glean this, foodies. The Sun Valley Harvest Festival, Sept. 18-21, is your chance to eat, drink … and eat and drink some more.
Along with the signature opening event, A Taste of Ketchum (a leisurely stroll through downtown to sample food, wine and desserts), the fifth annual fall feasting festival, which celebrates local eateries, wineries and regionally grown food, will premiere several new activities.
Three “Foodie Adventures” on Sept. 20 will pair dining with visits to unique locales (and a bit of exercise):
The Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch Adventure at the historical Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch in the Sawtooth Mountains will feature a lunch prepared by Jordan Boutry, the ranch’s executive chef, and Andy Blanton, owner of Cafe Kandahar in Whitefish, Montana. On the Galena Lodge Bike Adventure, burn off some calories by taking a mountain-bike ride north of Ketchum, then erase the exertion effects during a lunch at the Galena Lodge prepared by Don Shepler, the lodge’s executive chef, and Wes Hamilton, executive chef at Couloir Restaurant in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. At the Nighthawk Farm Adventure in Bellevue, join farmer-owner Robin Englehardt and guest chefs Jen Castle and Blake Spaldin, from Hell’s Backbone Grill & Kitchen in Boulder, Utah, for a tour of the farm and a truly farm-to-table organic lunch.
Also new are a Swingin’ Speakeasy dance and cocktail soiree Sept. 19 at the Cornerstone Bar & Grill that will toast the 1920s (get your flapper costume now); and a wine tasting Sept. 19 at The Picket Fence store in Ketchum.
Sample a “taste of” Sun Valley and Hailey this year, too. A new “Swine, Wine and Dine” event Sept. 19 in Hailey will feature a pig-carving demonstration and food samples from Hailey restaurants. A Taste of Sun Valley at Trail Creek Cabin will close the festival Sept. 21 with cuisine from Sun Valley Resort chefs, including culinary director and James Beard Award finalist John Murcko.
Returning activities include a free Meet the Locals event at Atkinsons’ Market in Ketchum, which offers an opportunity to chat with and sample products from local farmers and ranchers (Sept. 19); a Martini & Caviar party at the Roundhouse Restaurant on Bald Mountain (Sept. 20); and Sawtooth Brewery’s Oktoberfest Garden Beer Garden at Ketchum Town Square (Sept 20).
In 2013, Fodor’s Travel included the Sun Valley Harvest Festival on its list of top fall harvest festivals in the U.S.
