School board seeks fiscal assistance

Applications being accepted for new Financial Committee

Anyone interested in serving on a new financial advisory committee to the Blaine County School District board of trustees has until a Friday, Aug. 29, deadline to submit an application. Applicants are required to live in Blaine County.
The school board intends to finalize appointments to the committee at its next regular board meeting on Sept. 9.
According to the policy for the new Financial Committee, approved by the school board on Aug. 12, each of the five board members can appoint one volunteer to the committee. Other members of the committee will include a Blaine County Education Association representative or other staff member, a school administrator, the district business manager and the district superintendent or assistant superintendent.
The policy provides that additional committee members may be appointed by the board as a whole as needed.
Appointments will be for one year, but can be extended for a maximum of three years.
The purpose of the committee is stated in the new policy: “The board recognizes it is critical to be good stewards of the public funds by ensuring transparency, accountability and efficiency in the district’s finances. The Financial Committee (FC) is designed to act as a committee to the board regarding the district’s financial interests and operations and assist in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities and ensuring the public’s trust. It is not the intention that the FC make policy or manage staff.”
The policy provides that the Financial Committee will review issues at the board’s direction, but that the committee can also bring issues to the board’s attention.
The policy provides further that the committee will “assist the district in educating the general public concerning school finances issues, including creating reader friendly budget information.”
Committee members are required to attend at least 75 percent of committee meetings. Those meetings, as specified by state open meeting law, will be open to the public.
