201 cyclists make Bogus Basin climb

Valley bikers earn gold paced by Feldman

     Wood River Valley cyclists enjoyed a good day Saturday, Aug. 16 competing in the 42nd annual Bogus Basin Hill Climb on a 15-mile course with 3,500 feet of climbing near Boise.

     Local age-class gold medalists in a field of 201 cyclists were Richard Feldman (Men’s 45-49), Dan Daigh (60-69) and John Swyers (70-plus), Susan Thoreson (Women’s 50-59) and Francette Labatut-Miller (Women’s 60-and-up).

     Swyers, 75, clocked a 12-second time improvement.

     Placing second in his class was Roger Miller of Sun Valley (Men’s 70-plus). In third were Tom Campion of Ketchum (Men’s 70-plus) and Jon Holmquist of Ketchum (60-69).

     They were among 20 Wood River cyclists in the field of 172 male and 29 female finishers.

     Idaho state time trial king Feldman, 45, of Ketchum’s Durance/Colnago team finished fourth overall in 56:05.

     Galena Grinder men’s marathon champion Jamie Yanik, 38, of Boise won Saturday’s men’s title in 52:01 ahead of last year’s Bogus Basin winner William Barta, 18, of Boise (54:49) of the Boise Young Rider Development Squad (BYRDS).

     Women’s winner was Brooke Parent, 35, of Boise in 1.02:20, good for 25th place overall. In second was last year’s Bogus Basin female champion Sarah Barber, 38, of Boise, 52nd overall in 1.09:46.

     Hailey’s Brad Walker, 32, of The Elephant’s Perch team placed 15th overall and fourth in the Men’s 30-34 age class at 1.01:23. Walker was the Men’s 30-34 silver medalist in the USA Cycling Marathon Mountain Bike Nationals July 5 at Sun Valley.

     Daigh, 62, of Ketchum and Team Sludge was 35th overall in 1.06:35 for the Boise climb. And Ketchum’s Charley French, 88, of Durance/Colnago finished the climb in 2.21:34.

     Local results starting with overall placings:

       4—Richard Feldman, 45, 56:05 (1st Men’s 45-49). 15—Brad Walker, 32, 1.01:23 (4th Men’s 30-34). 35—Dan Daigh, 62, 1.06:35 (1st Men’s 60-69).

       56—Kris Thoreson, 57, of Durance/Colnago 1.10:28 (8th Men’s 50-59). 57—Scott Grill, 56, 1.10:29 (9th Men’s 50-59. 64—Jon Holmquist, 61, 1.11:50 (3rd Men’s 60-69). 71—Ralph Pavone, 61, of Team Steep and Deep 1.13:56 (4th Men’s 60-69).

       76—Ray Liermann, 58, of Team Two Dog 1.15:56 (13th Men’s 50-59). 96—Herberth Corrales, 51, of Sun Summit South 1.18:28 (18th Men’s 50-59). 119—Jim Walker, 59, 1.23:16 (28th Men’s 50-59). 135—Craig Phelan, 63, 1.27:03 (11th Men’s 60-69).

       142—Susan Thoreson, 53, 1.28:31 (10th woman, 1st Women’s 50-59). 144—John Swyers, 75, of Durance/Colnago 1.28:57 (1st Men’s 70-plus, 12-second time improvement). 160—Roger Miller, 71, 1.33:06 (2nd Men’s 70-plus). 170—Thad Farnham, 60, 1.37:58 (14th Men’s 60-69). 171—Tom Campion, 72, 1.38:12 (3rd Men’s 70-plus).

       176—Carol Rank, 57, 1.40:54 (19th woman, 4th Women’s 50-59). 184—Francette Labatut-Miller, 61, 1.45:38 (22nd woman, 1st Women’s 60-plus). 195—Kathy Walker, 57, 1.58:53 (26th woman, 7th Women’s 50-59). 200—Charley French, 88, of Durance/Colnago 2.21:34 (4th Men’s 70-plus).
