All-Star slugfest wraps up Hailey softball season

“Tan” team rips 26 hits in 20-17 victory

Home runs aren’t the saving grace in a slow-pitch softball game. Rather, it’s when you hit them.

     That’s what coach Frank Suwanrit’s “Tan” All-Star team demonstrated Wednesday night during the season-ending Hailey Coed Softball All-Star game at Hailey’s Lions Park.

     In a good-natured back-and-forth slugging contest, “Tan” outscored coach Jeff Jones’ “Red” squad 8-5 in the final three frames and eked out a 20-17 decision in nine innings.

     The All-Stars were allowed to hit unlimited homers in Wednesday’s crisply-played 79-minute game and there were 13 round-trippers leaving the grounds. The “Tan” winners only had four homers, compared to nine by “Red.”

     Yet “Tan” homers were timely in the team’s 26-hit attack.

     “Tan” pitcher Sean Harrington (5-for-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI) crunched a two-out, three-run homer in the seventh for a 16-12 cushion and left center fielder Greg Edwards (4 hits, 6 putouts) belted a two-out, two-run blast in the ninth for a 20-16 lead.

     The “Red” star for the evening was left center fielder and leadoff hitter Ryan Stavros (3 runs, 4 RBI). The lefty hitter lined solo homers his first three times up, finished with four hits and made seven catches in the field—two of them spectacular grabs of wicked line drives off the bat of Kenny Nelson.

     Providing other highlight-reel fielding plays were Greg Edwards with an over-the-back grab of Shanell Nelson’s deep drive, and “Red” flychaser Brandon Beall with a diving catch of an Anna Edwards gapper. Pitchers were Harrington and closer Sean Moore of “Tan,” and Rich Ulrich for “Red.”

     Beall (3 RBI) powered two homers for “Red,” as did Joe LaManna (4 hits, 3 runs, 5 RBI) and T.J. Petersen (4 RBI). Other “Red” hitters in the 22-hit attack included Sarah Nelson (2 hits, 3 runs), Sara Meyers (2 hits) and Bryan Burrell (3 hits, 2 runs).

     Helping “Tan” score runs were Kyle Bennett (4 hits, 3 runs), Jamie Stone (3 hits, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Kenny Nelson (3 hits, 2-run HR), Jamie Ulrich (2 hits, 3 runs) and Jimberly Rooney (2 hits). Brandon Ivie played a solid center field for the winners.

     The league champion 7 Dog Ranch squad had seven All-Stars split between “Tan” and “Red” and they showed their hitting prowess with a combined 21-for-31 (.677) batting average including 19 RBI (7 HR, triple, 5 doubles).

 

Correction

     Wicked Spud/Overhead Door’s third-place effort in last weekend’s Hailey Coed Softball League tournament included a strong batting effort by Jamie Ulrich, who went 9-for-11 with 6 runs scored in three Spud wins.
