Report: West Magic bat not rabid

Sheriff praises quick thinking by grandmother

Blaine County Sheriff Gene Ramsey said Monday that a bat that bit a 6-year-old girl on Aug. 1 at a West Magic residence did not test positive for rabies.
Ramsey said the family was notified of the test results on Aug. 6, sparing the girl of having to take a full series of rabies vaccinations.
The bat was tested by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game after it was delivered to them by the Sheriff’s Office, which got the bat at St. Luke’s Wood River hospital, where girl and bat were taken after the girl was bitten.
The girl was playing in the yard at her grandmother’s residence when she was bitten. Ramsey praised the grandmother for catching the bat after it bit the girl.
“That was one cool grandmother; having the forethought to grab that bat,” Ramsey said. “She had the composure to get the bat and put it in a jar. That saved a whole lot of grief.”
