Hailey buys 10 acres near Heagle Park

Bend in river is popular swimming hole in summer

    The city of Hailey bought 10.5 acres last week adjacent to Della View subdivision’s Heagle Park on both sides of the Big Wood River from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for $15,168.
    The land, which is unbuildable, is made up mostly of steep hillside on the west side of the Big Wood River. Several acres are on flat land on both sides of the river, including a stretch of gravel that is used as a beach in summer, and a narrow strip leading to the Stevens family ranch south of Heagle Park.
    The purchase was approved by the City Council on Monday.
    A memo written by City Attorney Ned Williamson last week states that the land was purchased to guarantee public access along the river and to potentially allow for public amenities in or by the river.
    City Administrator Heather Dawson declined to speculate on what amenities the city could build at the site.
    “No discussions for that are happening now,” Dawson said.
    The north end of the city’s new property is adjacent to land held in a conservation easement by the Wood River Land Trust. The west side of the property is adjacent to state-owned land.
