Bike path to be paved through Hailey

Fox Acres to Myrtle closed through Aug. 15

     Blaine County Recreation District trails administrative assistant Janelle Conners said Monday that work on Phase One of the two-year Wood River Trails reconstruction project is going “pretty smoothly.”

     She said the initial paving has been completed on a 4.5-mile segment of the bike path from Gannett Road south of Bellevue, north to Fox Acres Rd. in Hailey. Some occasional shoulder work on the completed path remains, she said.

     This week, contractor Idaho Sand and Gravel began work on the next two-week construction segment—from Fox Acres Rd. through the heart of Hailey north to Myrtle St.

     Workers were grubbing the shoulder of the bike path through today, Wednesday, and will be pulverizing the old bike path Thursday and Friday.

     No road closures or delays in vehicular traffic on crossing streets are expected, although the bike path itself is now closed from Fox Acres to Myrtle. In contrast, the completed segment through Bellevue caused some road closures because of the close proximity of the bike path to city roads.

     Base preparation begins by Friday from Fox Acres to Myrtle and continues with paving into the beginning of next week. This section of new pavement is due to be done and open to bikers and walkers by the Aug. 16-17 weekend.

     Starting Monday, Aug. 18, current plans call for an estimated three weeks of work on a lengthy 3.5-mile segment from Myrtle St. north to Ohio Gulch Rd. During that period the bike path will be closed, so bikers will have to use Buttercup Rd. in their travels.

     Idaho Sand and Gravel started the project in Bellevue June 17 and are hoping to wrap up work for 2014 by mid-October at East Fork Rd. north of Ohio Gulch.

     On May 21, Blaine County voters approved a two-year temporary levy to reconstruct, resurface and rehabilitate the Wood River bike path from Bellevue to north of Ketchum in order to restore its useful life for another 30 years. The 20-mile artery through the valley was first built in 1984.
