The summer reunion of the well-known Braun family will feature national headliners at the 11th annual Alternative Country Music Festival Thursday, Aug. 7, through Saturday, Aug. 9, in Challis.
Idaho’s musical Braun family consists of original brothers Muzzie, Gary and Billy, along with Reckless Kelly’s Cody and Willy Braun, and Micky and the Motorcars’ Micky and Gary Braun.
This year’s festival kicks off at 5 p.m. on Thursday at the community stage at the Challis golf course driving range, a setting that is a natural amphitheater. McCall’s Jeff Crosby and the Refugees are the leadoff act. Mississippi songwriter Chris Knight is also set to perform that night along with The Turnpike Troubadours, back by popular demand, and Custer County’s Micky and Gary Braun of Micky and the Motorcars.
Grammy Award winner Rodney Crowell will perform at the Friday night concert, showcasing his singing and songwriting abilities that have earned him numerous country music awards. Originally from Houston, Crowell returns to the Braun Brothers Reunion this year with his complete touring band.
Crowell will headline the Friday show, along with Nashville song master Radney Foster. Other performers will be festival favorites Cody Canada and the Departed along with American songwriter Hayes Carll. The original Braun Brothers will kick off Friday’s festivities starting at 4 p.m.
Festivities pick up again at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the Guitar Pull, which features many of the artists from the weekend, along with some special guests and surprises. Next up is the Braun family, playing a mix transitioning from Western swing to old-time rock and roll. Following the Brauns will be the Black Lillies from east Tennessee, playing Americana bluegrass.
Next will be alternative country pioneer Jay Farrar and fiddle player Gary Hunt. Other Saturday performers will be Australia’s Down Under, Grammy-nominated band The Greencards and the Randy Rogers Band.
Closing the festival will be Austin-based Reckless Kelly, fronted by Braun brothers Willy and Cody, who return home each year to join family and friends for a weekend of music and memories.
“Holy snikes, it’s almost here,” Muzzie and JoAnn Braun wrote on the Braun Brothers Reunion website. “We hope everyone is having a terrific summer and making their travel plans to join us.”
In addition to the music, raffle tickets will be sold for the chance of winning a Braun Brothers Reunion guitar, a one-of-a-kind quilt handmade from T shirts autographed by this year’s festival artists or a package for next year’s event.
Tickets, camping and other festival information is available at Passes will also be available each day at the festival.
