“Shirley Valentine,” a one-character play by Willy Russell, ran 10 years ago for three weeks at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey before touring other venues in Idaho.
Actress Denise Simone’s portrayal of a British housewife who has an eye-opening adventure in Greece stole the hearts of audience members throughout the Wood River Valley.
Simone will once again lead this transformative comedy, for three nights only, from Aug. 7-9 at the Liberty Theatre on Main Street. The play is directed by John Glenn and Ann Price.
In the story, middle-aged Liverpool housewife Shirley Valentine is trapped in humdrum domesticity, frequently talking to her kitchen walls just for a bit of conversation. But when her best friend wins a trip-for-two to Greece, Shirley is suddenly pulled away from her boredom into a life-altering adventure.
Faced with sudden self-awareness, Shirley begins to see the world, and herself, in a different light. This humorous and touching play reminds us all that it’s never too late to change your life.
“Shirley Valentine” had its first runs in London’s West End and on Broadway in 1988 and 1989. A romantic comedy film adaptation was made is a 1989, directed by Lewis Gilbert and starring Pauline Collins, who also played the starring role in the stage version.
The play is being produced by the partnership of the Company of Fools theater group and the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.
Ten seats to “Shirley Valentine” will be sold for $10 each on each night at the box office starting one hour prior to the performance. There is a limit of two discounted tickets per person.
