World-class art under the summer sun

    The nonprofit Sun Valley Center for the Arts will host the 46th annual Arts & Crafts Festival this weekend, featuring exceptional work from around the country, as well as local arts and crafts from the Wood River Valley.
    According to Art Fair SourceBook, a comprehensive guide to the top-selling art fairs and craft shows around the world, the Sun Valley Center Arts and Crafts Festival is ranked in the top 100 fine art festivals in the nation.
    The annual event will feature more than 130 artists, including jewelers, painters, sculptors, clothing designers, ceramicists and furniture makers. They will present their work in a village of booths at Atkinson Park in Ketchum, on Friday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Food vendors will offer nourishment and refreshments. Admission is free.
    In addition to an incredible array of visual art and functional art, the festival also provides hands-on projects for kids and great lineup of music. Thirteen local bands and musicians will play during the afternoons of the festival, including Spare Change, the Boulder Brothers, All Night Diner, Rick Hoel, Hat Trick and Kim Stocking.
    The arts and crafts booths will display metal work from Kentucky, turquoise jewelry from New Mexico, leatherwork from New York, and drawings, prints, photography and paintings from coast to coast. The artists on display are selected by a jury from 500 applicants, and include several locals.
    “We are thrilled this year to partner with the Wood River Valley Studio Tour as they take charge of the artist demonstration tent for the weekend,” said festival director Sarah Kolash. “Festival-goers will have a chance to see local artists in action as they demonstrate their skills each day.”
    Artists from the Wood River Valley will demonstrate their process from 1-4 p.m. each day of the festival. On Friday, Deanna Schrell will demonstrate plein-air painting techniques. On Saturday, Mark Sheehan will demonstrate metal-working techniques. Jeannie Catchpole will demonstrate acrylic painting on Sunday.
    The kids’ activity area will provide creative diversions for young artists, including a chance to make bubble wands, paper birds and sun hats. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, adults will help children make art in different forms. Kids ages 8-12 can work independently but cannot leave the activity area unattended.
    Atkinson Park is adjacent to Hemingway
Elementary School in Ketchum. No dogs are
allowed on the festival grounds.
