Hailey to restrict use of fireworks

    The Hailey City Council voted Monday to reduce the allowable time period for use of fireworks in the city from two weeks to four days. The change is being made to reduce the risk of fires caused by fireworks.

    State law allows for fireworks to be lit from June 23 until July 5, and from Dec. 26 to Jan 2. State law allows cities and counties to restrict or even ban the use of fireworks.
    The City Council voted to limit the use of fireworks in Hailey from July 1-5 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1.
    A fire was started in Croy Canyon near Hailey on July 6 by a Roman candle, an aerial form of fireworks that can be purchased in Idaho, but is illegal to use in the state.
    The Croy Canyon fire started on private property, but quickly spread to public land. It consumed more than 800 acres before it was extinguished.
    Hailey Fire Chief Craig Aberbach said he has been in communication with other fire departments to see if they would be willing to standardize laws regarding the use of fireworks across Blaine County.
    “Some jurisdictions want to eliminate them altogether,” said Aberbach. “Others, like Hailey, want to only restrict their use.”
