Big increase in field at Burley Spudman

Blaine athletes finish 31.9-mile test

Several Wood River Valley triathletes beat the heat and challenged their stamina during the 28th annual Burley Lions Club Spudman Triathlon Saturday, July 26 in Burley.

Minico High graduate B.J. Christenson, 36, of North Salt Lake City, Utah returned to the top of the Spudman podium, winning by 16 seconds over last year’s men’s champion Sam Krieg, 38, of Pocatello.

Capitalizing on his strengths in the swim and run, Christenson (1.47:59) captured his fifth Burley Spudman title in six years over bicycle time trial specialist Krieg (1.48:15). Christenson’s splits were 13:21 swim, 58:50 bike and 33:49 run.

Women’s winner was Amber Foster of Saratoga Springs, Utah in 47th place overall at 2.09:32.

The 51.5-kilometer (31.9-mile) endurance test starting at Burley’s Waterfront Park had a big increase in participants from 1,455 last year to 2,061 this time around. There were 1,338 men and 723 women finishing last Saturday.

Challenges were the 0.93-mile (1.5k) Riverfront Park swim, the 24.8-mile bicycle ride (40k) and the 6.2-mile run (10k).

Former Wood River High athlete David Gundy, 36, of Boise finished only 12 seconds off his Spudman finish of last year. Gundy placed 57th overall and 11th in Men’s 35-39 with a time of 2.11:29. His splits were 16:37 swim, 1.00:51 bike and 48:20 run.
