Hailey to allow archery on public property

Rodeo arena to be approved site

    The Hailey City Council approved a plan last week that would allow for archery on public property, but only with a permit to ensure safety. The first approved site in the city is likely to be the Hailey Rodeo Arena in Wertheimer Park.
   “This will be another recreational amenity for the city,” said City Councilman Don Keirn.
   The city currently allows archery only on private property and restricts archers from shooting beyond their property.
   The city responded to requests by residents to establish an archery range and archery classes in the city by beginning a process that would expand the city’s ordinance to allow archery only at permitted sites.
   The city ruled out setting up a range at Old Cutters Park and at the Toe of the Hill Trail, due to safety reasons. City leaders eventually settled on the Hailey Rodeo Arena due to its enclosed space.
   Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter was instructed Monday to research options for regulating public archery ranges.
   Gunter said in an interview that he will soon begin researching appropriate ordinance language in order to write a permit that will ensure archers comply with established safety standards.
   “It will be done in a safe manner, and hopefully enacted by the end of summer,” Gunter said.
