With beautiful weather in the valley, what better way was there to spend a perfect summer’s day than to watch the National Pastime last weekend on the diamonds in Hailey?

With 40 games played in just three days, the 43rd annual Ray Nelson Invitational youth baseball tournament returned to Hailey July 24-26. It was a chance for the public to get its hands filled with memorable baseball and outdoor fun.

Matt Douthit was this year’s tournament director for the Wood River Baseball and Softball Association. There were 17 teams in three divisions including five from the WRBSA.

Jerome Northside teams captured championships in the 15U (15-and-under) and Minors 10U tournaments. Beast from Boise defeated Boise Crush for the Major 12U championship.

In Friday’s Donnelley Sports Skills Competition for U12 players, Wood River Green won the outfield relay, Boise Beast captured the Home Run Derby, Northside of Jerome won Around-the-Bases and Boise Crush won Around-the-Horn.

Wood River’s Hunter Thompson crushed the only home run in the 10U competition and James Cantrell of the Wood River All-Stars blasted a round-tripper in the U12 meet.

There was no shortage of good, exciting baseball.

Wood River’s 15U boys went 3-0 in pool play and received the No. 1 seed in the single elimination tournament. But Wood River ended up losing to Northside of Jerome in the championship game 20-4.

Wood River All-Stars 10U also played Northside of Jerome in the championship game and fell 15-2.

The annual tourney named for Hailey baseball booster Ray Nelson started in 1972.

Some highlights

The Wood River 15U boys went 3-0 in pool play with a 43-6 scoring differential. The local boys banged out 28 hits in the three wins led by Wilson Dunn, Kyle Nelson and Ike Buxton.

Coach Matt Douthit’s team tallied up the No. 1 seed through the tournament and faced the Shock in the semifinals where Wood River cleaned up the win, 14-3.

Andy Ruiz went 3-for-3 with three runs scored against the Shock and Alec Broman also had three hits including an inside-the-park home run for Wood River.

Jett Erickson dominated the Shock by striking out two and not allowing any earned runs while he was on the mound. Erickson also had two hits and a run at the plate.

Dunn, Peter Janotta, Klayton Douthit and Jake Blackburn all had two hits. Buxton (1 hit, 2 runs) and Wyatt Parish (1 hit, 1 run) both pitched in, too.

The championship game was a rematch of Wood River’s 18-4 preliminary victory over Northside—a win sewed up with a 10-run fourth. This time, Northside prevailed 20-4.

Northside ripped 19 hits. Dunn, Nelson and Janotta led Wood River with two hits each.

The tournament ended the season for the Wood River 12U and 10U All-Star teams, while the 15U boys are in Whitefish, Mt. for the regional tournament July 29-Aug. 2.
