The “Main Street Cabaret” opens tonight, July 25, for a three-day run at the nexStage Theatre in downtown Ketchum. Produced by both the nexStage and Laughing Stock Theater Co., the show promises a rollicking good night of Broadway favorites, food and libations.
The show features cabaret seating, where patrons can get appetizers and drinks from the nexStage bar before and during the show.
“We are back better than ever,” said director Patsy Wygle, who returns to the “Main Street Cabaret” after a year’s hiatus. Wygle and husband Keith Moore have produced and directed the show for over a decade—a show which features well-known tunes from “Les Miserables” and “Sweet Charity,” as well as songs from more recent shows such as the Tony Award-winning “Once.”
“It’s such a great time,” said Moore. “It gives local talent a chance to really shine.”
But this is no night of karaoke, however. Wygle and Moore have handpicked a gifted cast, ranging from the famous Sue Noel, who can usually be seen commanding the customer service counter at Atkinsons’ Market, to Tony Barriatua, production manager for the Idaho Mountain Express, who opens Snoopy’s “Just One Person” with a solo.
Local talent also includes Patty Parsons, Betsey Sise, Holly Ann Hatch, Jan Wygle, Joy Bond and newcomer Amy Nelson—and, of course, Wygle and Moore. Jim Watkinson accompanies the singers.
The “Cabaret” encourages the participation of young performers, many of whom have grown up around the nexStage.
Tara Burchmore, now a senior at the Community School in Sun Valley, has been singing on the “Cabaret” stage for several years. And Megan Mahoney, who attends CAP 21, an independent Musical Theater Conservatory in New York City, has been singing in the “Cabaret” since she was 8 years old. She’s 20 now.
“I’m singing ‘In Short’ from ‘Edges,’ which is about ways to ‘do away’ with your boyfriend. It’s a hysterical song,” she said.
Mahoney, who has a stunning Broadway voice, is also singing “Dance 10, Looks 3” from “A Chorus Line.”
Audiences can also look forward to tunes from “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “Wicked,” “Porgy and Bess” and “Shrek the Musical.”
“Main Street Cabaret” runs through Sunday, July 27. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $35 for reserved seating, and are available by calling 726-4TKS or in the theatre box office weekdays from 11-2 p.m.
The show runs for approximately 90 minutes. There is no intermission.
