Wood River 14-U Babe Ruth going to Whitefish

: Team wins Idaho State Tournament for shot at Little League World Series

The Wood River Babe Ruth 14-U baseball team will be representing the entire state of Idaho as it travels up north to Whitefish, Mont. For the Regional Tournament July 29-Aug. 2.

The team swept Lewiston in a 2 out of 3 series for the chance to play for some serious hardware. In game one, Wood River beat Lewiston, 4-3, and in game two, 5-1.

Wood River will be the sole Idaho team in the Regional Tournament with two teams representing Washington, Oregon, Montana and British Columbia.

Coach Matt Douthit said his team’s theory was to work one run at a time, which seemed to work. Douthit added that his team’s style (small ball) is what helped Wood River get this far. There were no home runs and no big hits, however, a lot of stolen bases, great plate discipline and great pitching.

Jett Erickson and Kyle Nelson had the winning formula as both youngsters pitched with precision and held Lewiston at bay.

Douthit said “it would be huge to (to get to the Florida where the Little League World Series is played). We’re representing Idaho.”

Currently, Wood River’s 14-U team will be competing in the Ray Nelson Invitational Tournament this weekend and then will be traveling to Whitefish next Tuesday.
