Mountain bikers invade Galena’s trails Saturday

For Whit Henry Galena Grinder

Bikers will invade the Galena Lodge trails north of Ketchum on Saturday, July 26 for the Whit Henry Memorial Galena Grinder marathon and cross-country mountain bike races.

The Galena Grinder will offer 45-mile, 22.5-mile, 17.5-mile and 10-mile course distances, depending on category. It will be staged three weeks after the Sun Valley resort hosted the USA Cycling Marathon National Championships.

It will mark the 13th anniversary renewal of the current incarnation of the Grinder, a mountain bike race that’s been held here for over two decades.

The Grinder 45-mile marathon begins at 9 a.m. July 26 and the other Knobby Tire Series races for Pro, Category 1/2/3 and Junior racers will start about 10:30 a.m.

Prize money is paid to Pro/Open marathon contestants starting at $250 for first-place men and women. There is also a cash purse for Pro/Open Category 1 cross-country bikers at 22.5 miles depending on the number of entries.

Entry fees range from $20 to $65 depending on the race. You can save money by registering in advance at usacycling.org (online entries taken until July 24 at 10 p.m.) or knobbytireseries.com. In general, there is no day-of-race registration.

The event is held in memory of mountain biking enthusiast Whit Henry, a 2001 Wood River High School graduate who died July 2, 2003 at the age of 20.
