FISHING REPORT

By BILL MASON

Actually, there is not much new to be said about our fishing that hasn’t been related in the last few weeks. In short, you can make things happen but you need to work at it. With low water levels and heated air temps making things difficult, I don’t see dramatic changes in our fishing for the upcoming week even if things are forecasted to cool down a bit. Let’s peek at what you can find.

Silver Creek: Water levels remain low but steady, and the water temps have actually dropped from what they were last week. This tells me that the aquifer springs are kicking in; however, at 63 degrees it is still warmer than I would like. Regardless, because of the new time restrictions from the Nature Conservancy (no fishing before 10 a.m. or after 10 p.m.), fishing is limited. Hatches are simple--Trico and Beatis spinners in the morning and a Dave’s CDC Trico Spinner #22, Mason Quill Beatis Spinner or a Rusty Spinner #22 will get the job done.

Big Wood: Best fishing is in the morning and evening with the middle of the day somewhat productive but a slow go. A spinner fall of E. deceptivus in the a.m. produces working fish and a Rusty Spinner #16-18 gets results. Otherwise, Para Adams #16, Tan Gulper Specials #16-18, Flashback Pheasant Tails #14 and Prince Nymphs #12-14 will also find some fish. Caddis in the evening has been strong and a Para Caddis #16 and Hemingway Caddis #14-18 work’s well.

Big Lost River Drainage: With only 149 cfs flowing into Mackay Reservoir, the upper river is very low and the fishing has been slow. It’s the lower river at Mackay that now gets some serious attentions. As mentioned last week, I have never seen the river this low (174 cfs) at this time of year. It’s never a great insect hatch and surface feeding stream this time of year; a variety of fly patterns such as Para Adams #16, Para PMD #16 and Sparkle Dun PMD #16-18 will find enough fish to make the trip worthwhile. Add Cranefly imitations and Prince Nymph #12 and Copper Johns #12-14 to your arsenal, you may be shocked at what you will find. If the river stays this low, I can only imagine what the Trico hatch will be next month. It might be epic.

Warm Springs/Trail Creek: Both are getting very low but still fishable. Standard patterns in size 16-18 should find a few fish in the deeper runs.

Penny Lake/Lake Creek/ Gavar’s Lagoon: At last look, all were loaded with fish. Various baits and fly’s will find fish.

S. Fork Boise: Not much change in flows here, which makes for nice floating and tough wading. Also, what seems to be constant, much of the better fish are being found in the lower reaches (Cow Creek/Danskin Bridge area). Look for Hoppers, Pink Albert’s and Caddis.
