Drivers of hot cars will get another chance this year to test their machines against each other as the sixth annual Sun Valley Road Rally takes place this Saturday on a 3.2-mile stretch of state Highway 75 north of Ketchum.
In last year’s race, a Bugatti-owned 2013 Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse, driven by professional driver Butch Leitzinger, achieved a rally speed record of 230.2 miles per hour.
According to a rally news release: “We anticipate Bugatti to be present again this year, along with several other supercars, sports cars and fabulous vintage cars. The new Porsche 918 will be on hand at this year’s rally, as well as a few Corvettes that will be featured on the Velocity Network’s Corvette National Television Series this fall.”
The stretch of Highway 75 between the Wood River and Cathedral Pines campgrounds will be closed intermittently throughout the day as cars, one at a time, compete for top speed. The 3.2-mile stretch of highway features a long, straight, slightly downhill roadway to give drivers a chance at optimum speed.
Proceeds from the event go to the Blaine County Community Drug Coalition, a nonprofit organization committed to preventing alcohol and drug abuse by young people.
This year’s event starts on Friday with a drivers’ luncheon and vehicle inspection, followed by the Ketchum Cruz that evening from 6-8 p.m. The Cruz, free to the public, is a parade of vintage and super automobiles, including those that will participate in the next day’s rally.
The Cruz will run through the streets of Ketchum and Sun Valley and will be followed by a display of the vehicles at the Ketchum Town Square.
Saturday’s rally runs from 9 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. To get there, the public needs to ride the buses that can be boarded at the Sun Valley Ice Rink. Buses will leave the area between 7:30 and 10 a.m. and will return spectators to their vehicles on return runs.
Tickets to attend can be purchased that day at the bus boarding area or earlier at the Porsche raffle tent near Atkinsons’ Market in Ketchum. Tickets are $10 each or $20 for a family of four.
This year’s raffle is for a 2014 Porsche Macan, which can be seen at the raffle tent. Tickets can be purchased there or online at Additional rally information is also available at the website.
In addition to the Drug Coalition, sponsors for this year’s rally include O’Gara Coach of Beverly Hills, Cox Communications, Bugatti, the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office, Wood River Insurance, the Sun Valley Auto Club and Porsche of Boise.
