The Wood River Valley boasted one winning team and dominated the top spots of the Women’s Open division during the 23rd annual Sawtooth Relay 61.9-mile relay race from Stanley to Ketchum June 14.
Placing first of 19 teams in the Corporate Division, and 21st overall of 300 teams, was the Idaho Bioscience squad of Christian Coe, Nathaniel Freedman, Charles Kistler, Levi Perryman, Patrick McKain and Clint Kelly, all from Ketchum.
Their finishing time was 8 hours, 14 minutes and 44 seconds.
Recently, the event’s final results were released online covering the 1,805 participants. This article is a summary of those results and the team efforts of all.
Terry Hoebelheinrich, Sawtooth Relay co-director, said, “Athletes were treated to a full moon for the June 14 event. The weather was nearly perfect with dry conditions and mild temperatures.”
For the first time ever, two high school boys’ teams placed first and second overall in the relay. Team LSD (Long Slow Distance) also set a course record for the High School Boys’ division at 6.16:21 for a pace of 6:04 a mile. In second place 14 minutes back was Keenyan of High School Boys, at 6.30:57.
In his ultramarathon debut Boise State University graduate Kevin Haro from Nampa/Boise set a new Solo course record with a time of 8:28:52 for 8:12-per mile pace.
He finished ahead of 274 teams. Haro beat the next-best Solo athlete by 76 minutes and demolished Chris Lundberg’s three-year-old Sawtooth Relay Solo record by 15:35.
Women’s teams from the valley posted impressive finishes. Out of 67 women’s teams, locals placed second, fourth, fifth and 13th. Also, one women’s team in the Corporate division placed 11th of 19 teams.

2nd Women’s Open—Cellar Homies 8.29:48 for 34th place overall with Abby Siebert, Cara Shumate, Kendall Friedman, Tami Harrison, Liz Clark and Jen Noel, pace of 8:13 per mile.
4th Women’s Open—Moving Boxes 8.30:41 for 36th place overall with Karly Maratea, Angie Grant, Joanna Peters, Deb Robertson, Shawn Myers and Correy Shanahan, pace 8:14 a mile.
5th Women’s Open—Pain Killaz 8.36:57 for 40th place overall with Amy Drumm, Kathy Noyes, Leigh Morse, Julie Lyons, Jeni Cook and Michaelyn Muggli of Boise, pace 8:20 per mile.
13th Women’s Open—Rock Out with Your Socks Out! 9.19:08 for 97th place overall with Leah O’Flynn, Noilyn Hogen, Molly Meyers, Jennifer Wonder, Molly Elshire and Joanna Bradley, pace 9:01 per mile.
11th Corporate—Dangerous Curves 9:48.34 for 149th place overall with Jenny King, Lea Piper, Susie Kolwyck, Suzanne Miller, Megan Thomas and Barbi Jolley, pace 9:29 per mile.
Another top-finishing local group in Masters Women was “Team Me-No-Pause” with Teresa McGoffin, Anne Jeffrey, Lucy Bourret, Elizabeth Caldwell of Murray, Utah, Nancie Krankkala and Kelly Martin.
They finished fifth of nine teams in Masters Women at 10.42:26 for 233rd place overall.
Seven other Wood River Valley teams did well in classes:
7th Corporate—Sawtooth Monu-Mentals 9.11:05 for 82nd place overall with Matt Phillips, Daniel McFaul and Brant Petersen of Boise, Susan James and Barbara Garcia of Stanley, and Josh Switzer, with a pace of 8:53 per mile.
9th Corporate—The Huskies coming home to Hemingway Elementary in 9.36:58 for 130th place overall with Don Haisley, Amanda Ewig, Kate Mitchell, Jamie Harding, Shawn Schumacher and Char Roth, a pace of 9:18 per mile.
12th Corporate—Cunning Stunts 9:58.39 for 168th overall with Lauren Bertelson, Piper Reed, Stephanie Cook, Michael Reed of Las Vegas, Jon Eriksen and Maggie Cummings, a pace of 9:39 per mile.
The event began at various times between midnight and 9 a.m. June 14 at Stanley Elementary School 60 miles north of Ketchum. Elevation gain in the trek over Galena Summit was 2,361 feet of gain, and 3,201 feet of elevation loss.
The five solo runners this year were Kevin Haro (8.28:52), David Leisten (9.45:00), Glen Carpenter (10.37:05), Leon Rothstein (12.58:30) and Charles Francisco (15:00.05).

17th Men’s Open—Happy Feet 8.36:14 for 39th place overall with Cyndi Ochoa, Cristian Ochoa, Pedro Gonzalez, Daniela Arkosi, Artina Valencia and Carlos Chavez, pace of 8:19 a mile.
57th Men’s Open—St. Luke’s Bottom Dwellers 10.40:23 for 229th place overall with Dennis Stone, Nichole Moos, Annette Bauer, Bruce Bauer, Josh Turnage and Aaron Moos, pace of 10:19 a mile.
42nd Coed Open—The Colonel’s Crew 9.28:02 for 116th place overall with Hilary Smith of Los Altos, Ca., Katie Mitchell of Monte Seveno, Ca., Alaina O’Neill, Veronica Homme of Boise, Kate Weihe and Rich Cardillo, a pace of 9:09 per mile.
Hoebelheinrich said, “Sawtooth Relay funds Polycystic Kidney Disease research at the Kidney Institute, University of Kansas and encourages participants to register as organ donors through the Idaho Donor Network.”
Registration for the 2015 Sawtooth Relay opens Jan. 2, 2015. The 2015 event is set for June 13 from Stanley to Ketchum, finishing as always at Atkinson Park.
