Firefighters have gotten the upper hand on the Preacher Fire, the lightning-caused wildfire burning in sagebrush and grass south of Carey.

The fire—which has burned more than 33,000 acres of federal Bureau of Land Management land—was 60 percent contained Thursday afternoon and firefighters had “stopped all progression,” said Kelsey Dehoney, public information officer for the Twin Falls District of the BLM.

The fire, which started Monday afternoon about six miles southwest of Carey, grew rapidly Monday and Tuesday. It burned a wide swath of desert on both sides of Highway 26 and temporarily forced the closure of the highway.

On Thursday, crews continued to extend a containment line and put out hot spots on the burn area, Dehoney said.

Dehoney said fire officials were predicting the wildfire would be contained by 10 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters expect to have full control of the fire by 10 p.m. Saturday, she said.
