WR Legion (26-4) stays hot in homestretch

League games wrap up today in Hailey

   Third baseman Brandon Benson ripped a two-out, two-run triple lifting the Wood River American Legion baseball team to a 10-8 victory over the Burley Green Sox on Thursday night in the nightcap of an Area C “A” twinbill at Burley.

     Benson’s fourth hit of the game and fourth RBI made a winner out of his brother, relief pitcher Cameron Benson (5-0), who threw two innings of scoreless ball with three strikeouts to hold off Burley.

     Cam Benson held the Green Sox without a run in the home seventh to preserve the lead.

     Freshman starting pitcher Christian Hovey (3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) scattered six hits in five innings for the Wranglers and left with an 8-7 lead. Burley tied it 8-8 in the home sixth, setting the stage for Brandon Benson’s clutch hit in the seventh.

     Wood River earned a split of the doubleheader after Burley won the first game 5-1 behind a strong pitching performance by Gabe Rebollozo.

     It was the second straight West Division doubleheader for the Wranglers against a league contender, and for the second straight time Wood River bounced back for a split by winning the second game.

     In Thursday’s second game at Burley, Wood River (11 hits) was also sparked by the hitting of Cameron Benson (2 hits, 1 RBI), Finn Isaacson (2 hits, 1 RBI), Tyler Price (triple, 3 runs, 2 BB), Mikey Levy (double, 2 runs) and Owen Gifford (3 runs, 1 RBI, 2 BB).

     Wood River built a 5-1 lead in the fourth before Burley (8 hits) rallied for the 8-8 tie. The Wranglers won despite committing seven errors that led to five unearned runs.

     In the first game, Jens Blackman scored the only Wrangler run as seven different Wood River players had hits, along with drawing six walks. The Wranglers couldn’t get hits with runners on base despite a five-inning, seven-hit mound job by Nic Tidwell (3-2).

 

Quick work at Canyon Ridge

     Wood River (26-4, 18-3 road, 14-2 West Division) stretched its current win streak to three games Monday with 10-0 and 19-9 five-inning run-rule victories in Twin Falls over the Canyon Ridge Hawks.

     Gifford (3-0) tossed a two-hit shutout with just one walk and four whiffs in the opener and got all the runs he needed when Brandon Benson (2 hits, 2 runs) clouted a three-run homer in the second—his second round-tripper of 2014.

     Eight different Wranglers chipped in to the 11-hit attack including Cam Benson (2 hits, 5-for-7 for the twinbill), Price (2 hits, triple), Jesse Vercelli (2-run double), Dylan Broman and Zach Nelson (2 runs each).

     Nelson Cantrell earned his first pitching win with four innings of work in the second game. The Wranglers (15 hits) pieced together three big innings—a five-run second, six-run fourth and eight-run fifth.

     Contributors included Cam Benson (3 hits, double, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Gifford (2 hits, 3 runs), Tidwell (3 hits, double, 2 runs), Cade Schott (2 hits, 2 runs), Cantrell (2 hits, 2 runs, 3 RBI) and three runs scored apiece by Levy (2 RBI) and Blackman.

     The nightcap win represented the 20th time this season in 30 games that coach Lars Hovey’s resurgent Wood River squad has scored 10 or more runs in a single game.

     Wood River finishes its regular-season league slate today, Wednesday with a home twinbill against the tough Canyon Ridge Black Hawks at 3 p.m. at Founders Field.
