Educational choice good for the county

As a parent who has experienced Waldorf education for the last three years at the Mountain School, as a member of the Syringa Mountain School board of directors, and as a person dedicated to improving educational access and choice for students of all ages, I am proud of the tremendous effort and hard work that has gone into building Syringa Mountain School—the first free, public charter school in Blaine County and first public Waldorf school in Idaho.
The board, staff and parents have spent thousands of hours to actualize the shared vision of what we all believe a public school can, and will, be. Our school will open on Sept. 2, and we will be ready to welcome 165 students and their families with open hearts. We know how important this first year is and I can assure you that none of us take this responsibility lightly. We are willing, ready and able to meet the high expectations that our parents, teachers and community require.
To me, the true beauty of Waldorf education lies in the inherent respect and sense of personal accountability that Waldorf-trained teachers have for each individual child. In Waldorf schools, the continual intellectual, social and emotional growth of students and teachers is paramount. We not only value and respect the individual needs of students, we understand that teachers are constantly learning and in need of support.
Educational choice in public schools allows parents to choose what works for each child. For my family, this means two children will be enrolled at Syringa and one at Wood River Middle School. I am thrilled that in the Wood River Valley we are not only expanding our educational choices, but leading the way in Idaho for educational diversity.
