ITD increases speed limit in south Hailey

Change goes into effect on Thursday, July 17

    The Idaho Transportation Department announced Monday that the speed limit on a short section of state Highway 75 in southern Hailey will be increased from 25 miles per hour to 35 mph on Thursday, July 17.
   The change affects an approximately one-quarter-mile section of highway beginning south of the Fox Acres Road traffic signal and extending north to near the highway intersection with Third Avenue South.
   ITD explained in a news release that the change is the result of an engineering traffic study conducted in May. The study recommended implementing the 35-mph speed limit on the south end of Hailey to provide a transition between the current 45-mph and 25-mph speed zones.
   “This speed limit change reflects how people are driving through the section and the fact that no pedestrians are present through the recommended 35-mph section,” stated Bruce Christensen, ITD district traffic engineer. “The lack of pedestrian traffic and safe operation by drivers in this section of roadway has led to the increased speed limit.”
   ITD reported that daily traffic through the area ranges from 15,000 to 20,000 vehicles per day, with an increase in the summer months.
   ITD is reminding drivers that the current speed limit remains in effect until new signs have been installed.
