Croy Canyon Ranch site sold to Shelter

$180,000 disbursed to programs for seniors

    The Blaine County Commission and Croy Canyon Ranch Foundation finalized an agreement Tuesday to disburse $180,000 to the Idaho Community Foundation and six area nonprofit groups to benefit senior citizens in the Wood River Valley.
    The money came from proceeds from the sale of a 20-acre parcel of land in Croy Canyon, west of Hailey. The property sold for $285,000 on May 28 to the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley. The foundation had $180,000 after paying off the mortgage on the property and covering other expenses.
    The Senior Connection in Hailey received $37,500 to support its many programs, including $10,000 to supplement the Connection Club daily lunch program, which provides a social outlet and a healthy lunch for seniors on a regular basis. It also received $5,000 for scholarships to the Memory Care Program to provide cognitive skill training and relief time to a caregiver, and $17,500 to provide seniors in their homes with regular health care and companionship visits to ascertain that their needs are met.         The ARCH Community Housing Trust received $12,000 to help retrofit 24 bathrooms at a senior housing development on River Street in Hailey for disabled access. The Blaine County Hunger Coalition received $10,500 to fund food costs of $750 per year for 14 seniors.
    The College of Southern Idaho Foundation received $10,000 to establish legal aid educational sessions to benefit Blaine County seniors. The St. Luke’s Center for Community Health received $10,000. The Hospice and Palliative Care of the Wood River Valley received $10,000 to further its mission for youths to interact with those seniors receiving hospice and palliative care services. The remaining $90,000 was used to establish a philanthropic gift fund within the Idaho Community Foundation with the goal of providing grant assistance in the future to programs benefiting Blaine County seniors.
    “We thought there would be need in the future,” said Kathleen Eder, executive director of the Croy Canyon Ranch Foundation. “We are pleased to be able to do something good for the seniors in this community.”
    Last summer, the Croy Canyon Ranch Foundation called it quits after a five-year fundraising effort to build a residential facility for seniors on the property. It was aided by an allocation in 2007 of $982,000 in county funds toward development of the nonprofit project to replace Blaine Manor in Hailey.
    “That money will be paid back to the county through the sale of the Blaine Manor,” said County Commissioner Jacob Greenberg.
    The Bell Mountain Village private senior-care and skilled-nursing facility is being built in Bellevue to serve the present and would-be future residents of Blaine Manor. The facility is scheduled for completion at the end of the year.
