144-golfer field ready for Moose Madness

Men’s Member-Guest golf at Valley Club

The biggest event on The Valley Club’s summer golf tournament schedule gets underway today, Wednesday, July 9 with its biggest-ever field of golfers—144 men on 72 two-member teams.

Valley Club golf director Stoney Brown expanded the field for the 19th annual Moose Madness 45-hole Men’s Member-Guest golf tourney that runs through Saturday, July 12 at the mid-valley course.

Brown said, “This year we have added two flights of six teams, making the total players 144 (72 teams, 12 flights). In the past we limited the field to 60 two-man teams.”

The winners will be decided late in the afternoon of Saturday, July 12 when four days of golf boil down to the 12-team shootout settling the overall champions for the 2014 version of Moose Madness.

Last year’s winners of the “Moose Rut” shootout were club member Hanley Dawson III and his guest Albert “Bud” Furman. They won the alternate-shot format shootout over Richard Shelton and Tom Pestotnik. In third place were Ray Knowles and Ed Austin.

Brown explained the format by saying, “Each team is comprised of a Valley Club member and their guest. Guests come from not only the valley but the entire country as well. Teams tee it up for a practice round on Wednesday and start the tournament on Thursday, July 10.

“Format is round robin with 12 flights of six teams each. Each team in the flight plays a nine-hole match with the other five teams in their flight with nine points up for grabs in each match. Each team plays 18 holes Thursday, 18 holes Friday and nine Saturday.

“After the final nine-hole match Saturday, flight winners (total points leaders) meet in 12-team shootout to determine the overall champions for the 2014 Moose Madness. Saturday evening is the awards dinner where the champions and flight winners are honored.”
