Family trick riders will provide a new attraction during the halftime entertainment of this week’s 67th annual Days of the Old West Rodeo sponsored by the Sawtooth Rangers Riding Club at Hailey Rodeo Park.
McMillan Family Trick Riders consisting of young people ages 9-17 will perform tricks on their horses during intermission of each rodeo.
The three Independence Day holiday rodeos are today, Wednesday, July 2 through Friday, July 4 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are general admission only.
Don’t forget Family Night is today, Wednesday, July 2. Kids 10-and-under are admitted free with a paying adult.
Two of the more crowd-pleasing events are part of pre-rodeo activities starting at 7 p.m. each night.
They are mutton bustin’ for kids (set for the July 2 and 3 shows) and Hometown Bullriding for the braver older ones (at the July 4 Independence Day show).
Sign up for mutton bustin’ or Hometown Bullriding by calling Rangers secretary Madeline Amend at 788-4979. Contestants must arrive at the rodeo office by the arena at 6:30 p.m. to sign the paperwork.
Mutton Bustin’ is limited to children weighing 40 pounds or less. There are up to 12 riders each performance, on July 2 and 3. Entry fee is $5, which goes to ribbons for each contestant and a first-place prize for the rider with the most points. Bring your own bike helmets, or one will be provided. And be sure to wear jeans and appropriate clothing.
Hometown Bullriding is for local riders, only, with a limit of six riders for the July 4 show. Entry fee is $25. The winner receives a Montana silver buckle engraved with Hometown Bullriding 2014.
Reining and freestyle competition for Miss Days of the Old West is part of the 6:30 p.m. pre-rodeo activities the first two nights. Coronation of Miss Days of the Old West will take place at 6:30 p.m. July 4 prior to the final rodeo performance.
This year’s rodeo sponsors are Atkinsons’ Markets, Idaho Mountain Express, Professional Radiant Systems, Webb Landscape, Arbor Farms and Elma Garcia Films.
