Starweather homeowners working to be ‘firewise’

I was stunned to read that Wood River Fire Chief Bart Lassman told the county commissioners that “he had also wanted to promote fire-wise measures in Starweather subdivision … but homeowners there had declined to participate.”
I don’t know how Mr. Lassman got that impression, but it is absolutely a misrepresentation. The Starweather board of directors and all the homeowners take fire threats very seriously and have worked diligently to mitigate fire danger. Many years ago, the board made sure that every homeowner got the necessary information to “fire-wise” their individual properties. This has always been Mr. Lassman’s highest recommendation. The firewise information was re-sent to everyone this year.
After last year’s Beaver Creek Fire, the board recommended that a group of homeowners form a committee to research and make recommendations for additional neighborhood fire mitigation. I served on that committee and we even met with Mr. Lassman. We incorporated every one of his recommendations in our final report and the board has already authorized thousands of dollars towards implementing them.
If there were anything else Mr. Lassman would recommend, we would welcome his input. Starweather homeowners are thankful and incredibly appreciative of the amazing job firefighters have done to protect our homes. We do not take it for granted and are doing everything we can to do our part.
