Highway work to stop for holiday

ITD grants contractor permission to work on Saturdays

The Idaho Transportation Department announced Wednesday that construction on state Highway 75 south of Ketchum will be suspended for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
   ITD also announced that it has granted permission for the contractor, Idaho Sand & Gravel Co., to work on Saturdays until the project is completed.
   ITD defines the holiday weekend as Thursday, July 3, through Saturday, July 5. Since the contractor is prohibited from working on Sunday, ITD stated that work will not resume until Monday, July 7.
   The decision to allow work on Saturdays follows a discussion between ITD officials and the Blaine County Regional Transportation Committee earlier this month. At that time, members of the committee, who include representatives of local government entities in Blaine County, seemed amenable to allowing weekend work so that the project can be finished this year.
   The project, started in the spring of 2013, involves widening a 3.25-mile section of Highway 75 from Timber Way just north of East Fork Road to the bridge over the Big Wood River near St. Luke’s Wood River hospital. ITD earlier announced that the agency intends that the project be completed by the end of this summer.
   ITD reported that current work is focused on completing reconstruction of northbound lanes throughout the construction zone. Installation of storm drain pipe and infiltration ponds for the northbound lanes is expected to be completed this week.
   ITD further reported that the excavation of material in the northbound lane portion has been slowed because of saturated soils below the road base. That material needs to be removed and replaced with dry rock and soil. Excavation and replacement of road base materials is currently under way on the north end of the project.
   Utility work also continues at several locations in the construction area. ITD reported that Idaho Power Co., Intermountain Gas, Century Link and Cox Cable continue to relocate service lines within the construction area.
