In Hailey, community mosaic comes to life

Year-long project brought to fruition by many hands

    The Hailey Arts Commission’s Community Mosaic project was recently completed and installed at the Community Campus in Hailey.
    The volunteer-supported project was started last year during Hailey’s Arbor Fest, gathering the work of hundreds of participants who filled small squares with colored glass, beads and other donated materials.
    The individual squares, which include designs of leaves, bugs, flowers and butterflies, were combined into a 5-by-9 foot, three-panel mosaic of a tree that now hangs in the lounge area at the Community Campus.
     The tree is wrapped with a yellow ribbon in celebration of Bowe Bergdahl, the Army soldier from Hailey who was recently released after five years in captivity in Afghanistan.   
    A core group of artists led by Minna Casser and Angela Hicks created the mosaic with the help of Rene Peters, Kathy Noble, Leith Lickteig, Katie Rousey, Dorrie Cheney, Denise Delisser, Lesley Hardy, Taylor Morris, Tisa Macombs and Shekinah Davies.
    Fred Burmester of Stoneworks provided mentorship for the project.
    “Our persistent and dedicated volunteers deserve a huge thanks for all their hard work,” said Angela Hicks, who serves on the Hailey Arts Commission.
    The mosaic is one of two funded by a $1,000 donation from the city of Hailey two years ago.
    The second mosaic hangs in the Hailey Public Library. It features a likeness of former librarian Alba Arndt’s pear tree.
