The bats have been on fire for the Wood River American Legion baseball team.

Coach Lars Hovey’s Wranglers have raced to a 5-0 record in the early stages of their 36-game season with a 17.0 runs per game offense.

Tuesday, Wood River posted its first two Area C “A” West Division league wins by 12-6 and 20-6 scores over the host Buhl Tribe, on the Buhl field.

Winning pitchers Finn Isaacson (1-0) and Dylan Broman (2-0) did the job on the hill. The Wranglers batters pieced together several big innings for the twinbill and ripped 29 hits over the 14 innings played.

Hovey said, “We’ve been making good adjustments at the plate and looking at a little video.”

Tuesday’s games were closer than the final scores indicated.

In the opener, Wood River broke open a tight 4-2 game with a three-run fourth and relied on the pitching of Isaacson (5 innings, 2 earned runs, 5 BB, 4 K) and Nic Tidwell (2 innings) to hold off the Tribe.

The Wranglers committed only one error.

Eight Wranglers scored runs and seven contributed hits to the eight-hit attack led by Broman (2 hits, triple, 3 RBI), Nick Brunker (3 runs), Isaacson (3 runs apiece), Tidwell (2 RBI) and Christian Hovey (RBI). Wood River scored runs in five of its seven at-bats in the opening game.

The two rivals played under the lights in the nightcap in another seven-inning game that lasted until 11 p.m. The Wranglers (21 hits) clung to a 7-6 lead that ballooned to 15-6 and 20-6 with an eight-run fifth and five-run seventh.

Winning pitcher was Broman (4 hits, 4 earned runs, 3 BB, 2 K) with a four-inning starting effort.

He was followed on the mound with effective relief stints thrown by Tyler Price (2 innings, 0 runs, 3 K) and Cam Benson (1 inning, 0 runs, 2 K).

Leading the way at the plate were Brandon Benson (4 hits, 2 RBI), Mikey Levy (4-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 runs, successful safety squeeze bunt), Adrian Rojas (2 hits, 3 RBI), Cam Benson (3 hits, 2 runs, 3 RBI) and Tidwell (3 hits, 3 runs, 2 RBI, 2 SB).

Other hitters included Isaacson (2 hits, triple, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Price (2 hits, 2 runs, 3 RBI).

Hovey said, “The team has a lot of qualities. We’ve been trying to get some team strategies in play.”

Next West Division league games are Monday, June 23 at 3 p.m. at Founders Field against the Bear Lake Bears.

The Wranglers travel to the Boise area for games Friday, June 20 against the Treasure Valley Stars at Fruitland High School, and on Saturday, June 21 against the Boise Seminoles on the Fort Boise diamond.
