McClatchy fishing raises $3,500 for cancer camp

Magic Reservoir contest over Father’s Day

Fifty-four anglers took part in the fourth annual John McClatchy Big Fish Contest Saturday, June 14 at Magic Reservoir south of Bellevue.

The event raised $3,500 for Camp Rainbow Gold, bringing the four-year fundraising total for that cause to over $8,500, according to organizers of the McClatchy fishing tournament.

Placing first with a 3.12-pound catch was Mark Geske, ahead of Leslie Vroman (3.03) and Ruben Baldwin (2.95). Cash prizes went to the top three.

Jen Smith won the event’s grand raffle prize, worth over $600, of golf for four people at Sun Valley Resort’s Trail Creek Golf Course.

John McClatchy, a native of Philadelphia who came to Sun Valley in 1978, was a skier, carpenter, fishing and hunting guide and heavy equipment operator. The local man who loved to fish died of cancer July 22, 2010 at the age of 55.
