Longtime Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation alpine coach and alumnus Scott McGrew will take over as the organization's Alpine Program Director from Ruben Macaya on Sept. 1, according to a recent SVSEF press release.

Macaya, 66, SVSEF Alpine Program Director since 2000 and a coach with the organization for 25 years, will remain with the program as head coach of the U12 Travel and Home teams. The former head coaches of those teams, Adele Savaria and Tor Jensen. will also stay on the coaching staff.

     SVSEF Executive Director
Rob Clayton said about the change, “Everyone is familiar with Scotty and knows what he has done for the SVSEF to date. We feel Scotty will do an outstanding job in leading our entire alpine program.”

McGrew, 37, a competitor for the SVSEF alpine team for 10 years and for University of Washington from 1995-1998, returned to the SVSEF in 2002 joining the FIS coaching staff.

He was promoted to head coach of the J3 Team (now the U16 team) in 2004 and at the same time became assistant program director. Since, he has helped oversee the design, development and implementation of the alpine program.

Besides his expanded responsibilities, McGrew will remain at the helm of the SVSEF U16 alpine team.

A perpetual student, McGrew is currently working toward a Master’s Degree in business administration at Boise State University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of New Mexico in 2002 with Bachelor of Science degrees in biological sciences and anthropology.

McGrew is a Level 300 alpine coach and certified Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician. He and his wife Siri live in Hailey and are parents to three children, Simi, 7, Leila, 4, and Jaxon, 2.

He said, “To follow in the footsteps of Lane Monroe, Pat Savaria and Ruben at the helm of the alpine team is a huge honor. These guys were my coaches and heroes when I was a young athlete and personified the history, integrity and values of this organization.

“To follow in their footsteps and foster this experience for the members of the SVSEF alpine community is a challenge and responsibility that I’m excited to take on.”

Clayton added, “We are very grateful for all that Ruben has done for the program. He will continue to work with the SVSEF in several roles. He has agreed to assume the lead role for our U12 group and continue to function as our lead person for the alpine competitions we host. He will be a great asset with the upcoming Spring Series and national championships we will be hosting.”

Macaya, 66, a 1968 Winter Olympian for his native Argentina, coached the U.S. Ski Team from 1980-84, including the 1984 Olympic Team at Sarajevo where Debbie Armstrong, Bill Johnson and Phil Mahre captured gold medals.
