Fairfield, Palmedo grab President’s Cup titles

Golf tourney at The Valley Club

Changeable weather greeted the golfers competing in The Valley Club’s President’s Cup tournament last weekend. And the winners changed as well.

Greg Fairfield captured the Men’s Championship Flight gross stroke title with a 36-hole total of 78-74 for 8-over-par 152. He won by six strokes over Peter Atkinson (79-79 for 158).

Last year’s men’s winner Carmen Bradley, who had taken three President’s Cup titles in four years, settled for second place in Championship Flight net totals this time around.

The Women’s Flight winner was settled on the first hole of a sudden-victory playoff when Britt Palmedo (82-75 for 157) made a birdie to slip past defending champ Suzanne Williams (78-79 for 157). Williams had won three President’s Cup women’s titles in four years.

After high winds and cool temperatures hampered Friday’s first-round scores, Jerry Graham and Richard Seigel also captured gross stroke flight wins when milder conditions prevailed Saturday.

The 36-hole event was played Friday and Saturday, June 13-14. It is the club’s stroke play championship for men and women club members.

Net and gross prizes were given in each flight. The flight winners received pewter tankards. The men’s low gross and women’s low gross winners will have their names engraved on the perpetual trophy in the club’s trophy case.
