FISHING REPORT BY BILL MASON

I’d like to report some great breaking fishing news but unfortunately things are very much the same. Fishing is limited to only a few spots. A few insect hatches are producing decent results but they are tough. Water levels are still low in some places but too high in others to fish effectively. I don’t see much change in the next few weeks. In fact, as the irrigators begin calling for water, we may lose even more wade-able conditions.
SILVER CREEK—Water levels are still low and the bug activity is inconsistent but there is enough going on to make it worthwhile. It just may not be to one’s liking. Midges are the key hatch. Black Midge Pupa or a Black/Peacock Midge Pupa #18-20 fished just under the surface will produce favorable results. This is not unusual. I can remember fishing to this hatch much of June, some years ago. Also, a few PMDs are seen midday and when on the water, fish work on them and PMD Parachute #16-18 does the trick. Carrying Ants, Beatle and Callibeatis imitations is always a wise idea.
BIG WOOD RIVER—Some have pointed out that fishing a nymph up north may be possible, yet the overall system is still very unfishable. Because of the very slow runoff, it’s going to be some time for this to change. It’s been running at roughly 1000 cfs for nearly two weeks and with 65% of water content yet to come down……..you do the math. If weather stays the same, July could be a real possibility. But if it gets hot, things could get nasty.
WARM SPRINGS/TRAIL CREEK—Too high and off-color for fishing.
BIG LOST RIVER DRAINAGE—Water levels at the Chilly gauge indicate the Upper River may very well be fishable but until I get a true report, I can’t honestly pass on any favorable info. Adding more flow (700 cfs) to the lower river at Mackay may be tempting but wading the river is now a real issue.
PENNY LAKE/LAKE CREEK/GAVER’S LAGOON (HAYSPUR)—Low on fish in our area ponds but I suspect this will change. Flies and bait are effective.
SOUTH FORK OF THE BOISE—This is a tough call. They were scheduled to raise the water levels but as of Monday morning, nothing had changed. Water levels are going up in the Boise area. So if you follow the sequence of dam releases, the South Fork should pop up without notice. My best advice is check before you venture forth. It could mean the difference between wading the river effectively and becoming part of the floating debris that high water brings.
