Help Congress curb climate change

    I fully agree with the Mountain Express’ May 2 editorial on global warming (“Voters must act on climate change”); the heavy lifting requires effective government leadership. Yet, with a strong majority of America’s Republican voters (and too many Democrats) either in denial of global warming or against policies designed to curb fossil fuel consumption, how can a concerned voter in a very red state hope to effect positive action?
    Take Idaho’s 2nd Congressional District, for example. Mike Simpson, its long-serving congressman, consistently votes against policies for mitigating climate change. Yet, Simpson easily won his recent Republican primary contest.
    This record, unfortunately, is appropriate; Simpson, typically re-elected with lopsided majorities, is simply expressing the majority opinion of his district constituents (and campaign donors). Thus, support from Idaho’s 2nd for congressional action on countering climate change can only take root when enough of this district’s voters demand action.
    Simpson’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives again appears extremely safe. Combined with the congressman’s high party standing, this safety gives Simpson a perfect opportunity to help Republicans begin changing course on climate change.
    Nevertheless, Simpson will still need a strong shove. Thus, I urge all who are concerned about global warming, and especially those who otherwise support Simpson, to not only vote against Simpson in November’s general election, but to contact the congressman and tell him why he won’t get your vote. (Plan to do the same for as many elections as it takes; change of this sort will likely require the long game.)
    Finally, thank you to the Mountain Express for frequently publishing the newspaper’s own opinion with respect to global warming. I encourage concerned readers to follow suit.
