Debate coach Worst takes top Shay honor

WRHS activity awards for 2013-14

     Wood River High School debate coach Susan Worst received the top coaching honor during Wednesday’s Bob Shay Most Inspirational Awards Banquet held at the high school in Hailey.

     The fourth-year Wolverine debate coach earned the “Shay Cup” presented for the 25th time to Wood River coaches in the name of Shay, an educator and coach for 33 years in the Blaine County School District.

     Worst’s debate team went to Borah High School in Boise March 14-15 and captured the Class B state debate championship in competition sponsored by the Idaho High School Activities Association. It was Wood River’s first state debate title in 10 years.

     Other top awards presented to student/athletes Wednesday:

     Voted by coaches as “Outstanding Senior Athletes,” for the 2013-14 school year were Cooper Bailey and Janel Passey. Named the “Outstanding Seniors of Performing Arts” were Caleb Garvin and Sarah Arters.

     Three-activity letter winners were Eron Bates, Amy Cantrell, Michelle Casas Garcia, Taylor Douthit, Irving Gonzalez, Connor Hayes, Michelle Mason, Andrew Morse, Ciceley Peavey, Mary Petzke, Blair Radford, Kenya Schott, Nathan Stouffer, Samantha Sutton and Kyle Weller.

     Jim Boatwright Memorial Award winners were Eron Bates and Alex Taylor. Allan Patterson Memorial Awards went to Stephen Pfeiffer and Mariah Stout. Receiving Wood River Scholar/Athlete honors were Andrew Morse and Mary Petzke.
