Forest supervisor departs

New job in Alaska beckons

     The Sawtooth National Forest will be getting a new supervisor, following a decision by current Supervisor Becky Nourse to accept a job in Juneau, Alaska, as deputy regional forester for the Alaska Region.  She will report on July 28. 

     Nourse has supervised the Sawtooth National Forest since 2010, though she stepped down in March to take on a four-month assignment as acting deputy regional forester for the Intermountain Region in Ogden, Utah. She said she expected to return to the Sawtooth Forest until she was offered the job in Alaska.

     As supervisor for the Sawtooth Forest, she provided leadership to three ranger districts and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

     “It’s been a really great experience working here on the Sawtooth,” Nourse said. “I think we’ve gotten a lot of important work done.”

     She said accomplishments on the Ketchum Ranger District and in the Sawtooth Valley while she has been supervisor include:

• Collaboration with local fire departments to fight the Beaver Creek Fire, and now with numerous partners to do post-fire rehabilitation work.
• Working with the Blaine County Recreation District to create a summer trails system at Galena Lodge.
• Carrying out the planning for upcoming projects to reconstruct campgrounds at Stanley Lake and reroute the road to Redfish Lake.

     Nourse said her new job will be a step up in her career. She said she has worked in Alaska for the Forest Service on three previous assignments.

     Monty Williams is the acting forest supervisor for the Sawtooth and, according to a press release from the Forest Service, will continue in that capacity until Regional Forester Nora Rasure assigns someone to replace him or announces a new permanent forest supervisor.
