Golf pros gather at Pinecrest

Shootout in Idaho Falls

Forty-five professional twosomes including five from the Wood River Valley competed Monday and Tuesday in the $18,000 TaylorMade-adidas and Ashworth Golf Pro-Pro golf shootout at Pinecrest Golf Course in Idaho Falls.

Winning the $3,200 first place prize on the first playoff hole after carding a 54-hole score of 61-63-67 for 19-under-par 191 was the assistant professional team of Brett Kleinkopf from Boise’s Hillcrest Country Club and Travis Hofland, Twin Falls Golf Club.

In second place for $2,400 with the identical 191 score based on rounds of 63-64-64 was the twosome of Woody Spainhower, PGA head professional at Black Bull in Bozeman, Mt. and his partner Jeff Allen, assistant pro at Hilands Golf Club, Billings, Mt.

Kleinkopf and Hofland won the tournament by making par on the first playoff hole—after Spainhower and Allen shot a wonderful final-round 64 forcing the playoff.

In third place at 65-60-67 for 192 strokes and $1,700 was the twosome of Tom Anderson, PGA head professional at Laurel Golf Club in Laurel, Mt. and his partner Renzi Lee, assistant pro at Lake Hills Golf Club in Billings, Mt.

Dominick Conti of Sun Valley Golf Club and Ryan Nielson posted the top local score among the 33 twosomes in the main draw. They tied for 24th place with scores of 72-64-70 for 4-under-par 206.

They were followed in 27th place by Tyler Jones of Sun Valley Golf Club and Doyle Corbett at 67-65-77 for 1-under-par 209, and in a 28th-place tie by Jaime Sharp of The Valley Club and Lucas Brick at 72-66-72 for even-par 210.

Four-ball stroke play and a scramble were the formats for Monday’s first two rounds of the 54-hole Rocky Mountain Section PGA tournament, followed by the modified alternate shot format Tuesday.

Placing first by 15 strokes among the 12 Senior Division twosomes at Pinecrest were Kevin Burton, PGA, coach of Boise State University’s golf team, and John Wallace, PGA head professional at Terrace Lakes Resort in Garden City.

Their scores were 63-60-62 for 25-under-par 185, good for the $1,900 first-place prize.

Other senior teams from the Wood River Valley were:

In eighth place, The Valley Club team of Stoney Brown and Tommy Sanderson 70-66-74 for even-par 210, and in an 11th-place tie, the team of Scott Syms and Gardiner Young 73-68-73 for 4-over-par 214.

Scoring aces were Steve Meyerhoeffer, PGA head pro at Twin Falls Golf Club, and John Peterson, PGA Life Member.
