Carey High School principal John Peck thanked generous individuals and organizations that contributed about $20,000 in scholarships during Tuesday night’s 2013-14 Carey School Citizenship and Awards program.
Honors and scholarships went to the 10 members of Carey’s senior class who will graduate Thursday, May 29.
- Ashley Durtschi, Jennifer Mares, Arrianna Neilson and Lilly Rivera each received Austin Hennefer Memorial scholarships, which were presented for the final time.
· Hailey Rotary Club $1,000 grants were presented by Brian Alley to Lilly Rivera, Arrianna Neilson and Ashley Durtschi. The sale of tickets to Hailey’s Road Apple Roulette over the Fourth of July funds the grants. Hailey Rotary awarded 24 grants worth $24,000 in Blaine County this year.
· Lilly Rivera collected the Ketchum-Sun Valley Rotary Club scholarship given by president Jim Mason. That scholarship is funded through the sale of ducks during Ketchum’s Wagon Days event over Labor Day.
· Sun Valley Board of Realtors $1,000 scholarships presented by Rick Davis went to Lilly Rivera and Ashley Durtschi.
· Luis Garcia and Valerie Olsen earned scholarships from the Wood River Valley chapter of Dollars for Scholars, giving grants in Blaine County for 19 years. The chapter has given nearly $385,000 in scholarships locally since it was founded by Audrey Bashaw in 1995.
· Student of Hispanic Origin $1,000 scholarships through the Cimino Foundation were presented by Pat Weaver to Jennifer Mares and Luis Garcia.
· Ashley Durtschi earned the $250 DL Evans Bank grant, announced by Inga Del Real.
· Arrianna Neilson received the $500 Blaine County Republican Women scholarship.
· Lilly Rivera was the winner of the $500 Kiwanis International of the Wood River Valley Joe Wiederrick Memorial Scholarship.
· The Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Humanities once again presented High School Arts and Humanities grants to Carey students.
Valerie Olsen earned a grant for photography lessons with Stacie Brew. Shane Mecham received a scholarship for a game design workshop in Seattle, Wash. Tyson Mecham earned a grant for Sun Valley Summer Symphony piano lessons and workshops.
In addition, a Sun Valley Center Educator Award was presented to Carey teacher Jennifer Mecham for a Ringling College of Arts and Design Summer Teacher Institute at Sarasota, Fla.
Another highlight of the 75-minute program was the presentation of Citizenship Awards to male and female members of the four upper classes. Faculty members nominated the recipients.
Presenter Chandra Luke, the school librarian, said “citizenship is a reflection of our character.” This year’s recipients were students who made good choices in how they spent their schools days, she added.
Citizenship Award winners in the senior class and winners of $250 scholarships derived from student body fundraisers and an anonymous donation were Jennifer Mares and Tori Alvarez.
Junior class winners Tuesday were Paige Koudelka and Adolfo Andazola. Sophomore honorees were Emily Squires and Christopher Adamson. Top freshmen were Odalis Ocampo and Bridger Brown.
Other class awards, honors
Principal John Peck gave chocolate bars and certificates to five students who achieved perfect attendance in 2013-14.
They were senior Ashley Durtschi, junior Adolfo Andazola for a second consecutive year, eighth-grader Raymond Peck, seventh-grader Brittney Conrad and fifth-grader Vanessa Alvarez.
Student body officers for the 2013-14 year were revealed at Tuesday’s program and certificates were presented to the outgoing officers.
Incoming president is Adolfo Andazola, succeeding Lilly Rivera. New vice president is Shane Mecham, replacing Kylie Castle. Remaining the secretary is Jaicee Parke. And the new treasurer is McKenley Howard, replacing Tyson Mecham.
Valerie Olsen received the Cecil B. Smith Art Award as the outstanding art student for 2013-14. It was given for the 25th time for art excellence. Receiving honorable mention was Arrianna Neilson.
KTVB Distinguished Student Awards went to Lilly Rivera, Ashley Durtschi, Arrianna Neilson and Luis Garcia. Ashley Durtschi also earned the KMVT Academic All-Star Award.
Students selected the drama awards were: Best actor/actress—Christopher Adamson and Arrianna Neilson. Best supporting actor/actresses—Chris Peck and Lilly Rivera. Rookie awards—Ashley Durtschi and Tyson Mecham. Technician—Gabriel Lucero.
Next year’s Drama Club president is Christopher Adamson, replacing Arrianna Neilson.
Athletic awards
Carey School announced recipients of track and field awards and sports honors.
Track coaches Lane Kirkland, Lee Cook and James Morey gave out certificates of participation and letters to team members.
Coach Kirkland congratulated the 13 girls on the track team, which won the conference title for the first time in 10 years, and coach Cook saluted the 16 boys who all earned letters for track.
The top five point-getters on the girls’ track team were Daphne Kirkland, Arrianna Neilson, Clarissa Kirkland, Medin Cenarrusa and Kelsey Barker. Earning the high-point boys’ awards for 2014 were Luis Garcia, Tori Alvarez, Christian Zarate and Joe Parke.
Daphne Kirkland was named to the Carey Athletic Wall of Fame for doing three different sports for four straight years. She will have her name engraved on a perpetual plaque at the school.
Also announced Tuesday were next year’s Panther cheerleaders. They are Asia Pettingill, Hailee Johnson, Kennedy Howard, Kya Cutler, Bethany Squires, Shayla Adamson and Camery Colton.
Deloi and Jenny Dilworth were honored by the Carey Athletic Association (CAA) as the Panther Boosters of the Year. They receive free admission to next year’s home games for the Carey Panthers.
New CAA president is Nate Adamson, replacing Luis Garcia.
