The board of directors of the Community School in Sun Valley has given final approval for construction, beginning this summer, of a new Creative Arts and Middle School Building. The Dumke Middle School, shown here, will be demolished to make way for the new building.

The board of directors of Community School has given final approval for construction of a $7.5 million Creative Arts and Middle School Building at the private school’s campus in Sun Valley.

The project, which was earlier approved by the Sun Valley City Council and the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, got the go-ahead from the nonprofit school’s board of directors at a meeting on Monday, May 19.

The new building, which will help meet the need of Community School’s growing student population, is being funded by what the school describes in a news release as “generous supporters” of the school who have pledged more than $6 million thus far to pay for the building.

School spokeswoman Kate Wutz said Thursday that the remaining $1.5 million will also be obtained through fundraising and will not be taken from the school’s operations budget, which is also partially funded by donations.

“When we need to upgrade our facilities, we run a capital campaign, the funds from which go directly toward those campus improvements,” Wutz said.

The new two-story building will provide 20,250 square feet for education and administrative purposes. It will include music and arts classrooms, a lunchroom and teaching kitchen, a “maker’s lab” for project-based hands-on learning and a multimedia lab for video production and music recording classes.

“The project will be transformative for our campus and our educational programs,” said Head of School David Holmes. “Not only will the beautiful new building accommodate our growing enrollment, it will also provide state-of-the art facilities for the hands-on project-based Community School education of which we’re so proud.”

The new building will be built at the location of the current Dumke Middle School, which will be demolished beginning the first week of June. Construction of the new building will begin this summer and is expected to be finished by May of 2015.

Wutz said that middle school students will be housed in temporary classrooms until the new building is finished.
