1A athletes poised for state track challenge

District meet results from Jerome

Twelve Carey High School athletes along with five from Camas County High School and one from the Community School have qualified for the State 1A track and field meet Friday and Saturday, May 16-17 at Middleton High School.

All earned the right to compete in the Idaho High School Activities Association/United Dairymen two-day meet by placing among the leaders in the 4th District 1A track meet last Friday and Saturday at Jerome High School.

The Raft River Trojans won the girls’ team title (119-100 over Hagerman), and also tied Lighthouse Christian Academy of Twin Falls 144-144 for the boys’ team championship.

Carey’s girls (63.5 points) finished fourth of 14 teams just behind Hansen (64) with a gold medal-winning effort by the Panther 4x100-meter relay team of Daphne Kirkland, Clarissa Kirkland, Arriana Nielson and Kelsey Barker (55.64 seconds).

Panther second places went to Daphne Kirkland (pole vault) and the girls’ 4x200m relay team of Lilly Rivera, Nielson, Medin Cenarrusa and Barker. Meanwhile, Ava Mazzoni of the Community School was second in the 1600m.

Camas County senior Taylor Gorringe won the discus (104-8) and placed second in shotput (33-6). Her freshman teammate Ariel Reedy was second in discus (102-0).

Other top girls were Raft River sophomore Marcie Williams, winner of the 400m dash and 300m intermediate hurdles along with anchoring 4x200m and medley relay wins, and North Valley Academy senior Samantha Lofgran, winner of the 100m and 200m sprints.

The leading boy from this area was Camas County junior Isaac Simon. He placed second in high jump (6-0) and triple jump (40-9.75) at district and will carry the second-best qualifying measurements into the state meet.

Carey, sixth as a boys’ team with 44 points, posted its best district finish with a second from the 4x400m relay team of Tori Alvarez, Christian Zarate, Joe Parke and Collin Whitby.

Dietrich senior Jacob Dalton won the district 800m by 8.01 seconds, 1600m by 5.61 seconds and 3200m by 33.6 seconds—but he will find his dominance challenged at state by Logos (Moscow) junior Paul Ryan, who has a 9:09.93 time in the 3200m.

Other 1A winners were Lighthouse junior Gage Silva (110m/300m hurdles, 4x200 relay, 2nd 400m), Raft River junior Brandon Harper (long/triple jump, 400m, 4x400m) and Lighthouse freshman Eric Silva (100m, 200m, 4x200m, 2nd long jump). Race of the day Saturday was in the boys’ 400m, with Harper (53.38) nipping preliminary winner Gage Silva (53.72).
