The devil may have gone to Georgia, lookin’ for a soul to steal, but if you want to rosin up that bow or just enjoy the sound of amazing fiddling, then head down to Hailey on Saturday, May 17, for the Fiddlers of Idaho State Championship.
The championship contest will be held at the Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater at the Community Campus, at 1050 Fox Acres Road in Hailey.
“Anybody in the Wood River Valley who would like to jam with us is welcomed” the evening before the competition, said Richard Fife, business manager for Fiddlers Inc., which presents the championship.
The highest finishing Idaho resident contestant in each age-based certified division and the Open Division of this contest will represent the state of Idaho in the National Oldtime Fiddlers Championship contest to be held in Weiser, Idaho, in June.
The contest begins at 8 a.m. and is open for free public viewing. Donations will be accepted at the door to help pay for this and future contests.
The championship contest is open to contestants of all ages and there are no pre-qualifying requirements or competitions.
Competition is structured on six age divisions: Small Fry (ages 8 and under); Junior/Junior (ages 9 to 12); Junior (ages 13 to 17); Young Adult (ages 18 to 36); Adult (ages 37 to 59); and Senior (age 60 and above).
The contest includes an Open Division competition plus five entertainment events; Flat Pickin’ Mandolin, Flat Pickin’ Guitar, Trick & Fancy Fiddle, Banjo Pickin’ and the Train Song. New this year is the Novice competition for Small Fry, Junior/Junior, Junior and Adult classifications.
An informal Jam Session is scheduled for Friday, May 16, also at the Community Campus Performing Arts Theater in Hailey. The session begins at 6 p.m. and is open to musicians and the general public. There is no admission fee.
Contest rules and the contestant’s application are available online at www.FiddlersofIdaho.org.
For more information on the contest, contact Fiddlers Inc. at idahofiddlersinc@gmail.com or call (208) 260-0364.
