Survey says most parents pleased with schools

District releases results of ‘Parent Climate Survey’

By EXPRESS STAFF

Results released this week from a Parent Climate Survey conducted earlier this year show that 79 percent of the respondents gave the schools their children attend in Blaine County either an A or a B letter grade.
The survey, conducted in March for the Blaine County School District by K12 Insight, also showed that most parents are satisfied with school safety, although some have concerns about drug and alcohol abuse.

Over time, this annual school climate survey will show overall trends and will be one of several ways we can gauge our effectiveness with parents and students.”

The district reported Monday that it received 617 responses to the survey. Parents could either respond through an email invitation or by accessing a survey link available at the district website. The survey was also available in Spanish. However, results show that only nine responses were received from parents who answered questions in that language.
Survey participants were asked to respond to various survey subjects on a five-point agreement scale.
The survey shows that 88 percent of parents agree that teachers set high standards of learning for their children.
Regarding school safety and student behavior, the survey shows that 90 percent of parents believe their children are safe at schools. However, 30 percent of the respondents felt alcohol or drug use was a problem at their child’s school. About 80 percent of respondents agreed that their children are not threatened or bullied at school. Of the parents whose children ride school buses, 86 percent responded that they believe their children are safe on a bus.
Regarding student support, 66 percent of parents agreed that their children are treated respectfully, while 70 percent reported that their children enjoy going to school.
Ninety percent of respondents reported that their children have adequate technology or materials necessary for learning. Ninety-seven percent reported that their children’s schools are well maintained.
According to a news release, the district intends to conduct the survey each year.
“Over time, this annual school climate survey will show overall trends and will be one of several ways we can gauge our effectiveness with parents and students,” stated interim Superintendent John Blackman.
Complete survey results are available at the district website at www.blaineschools.org.
