Road levy would be good for Ketchum

    One of the goals of the city of Ketchum is to be a “well-connected” community. We want people to have good transportation alternatives, which includes roads as well as bicycle lanes and sidewalks.
   The levy will provide funds to improve streets, sidewalks and bicycle lanes in the city of Ketchum, as well as the rest of Blaine County.
   Roads throughout the county are deteriorating because maintenance has been deferred due to a lack of funding. Property taxes have not been used to fund county road and bridge maintenance since the late 1990s. Most of the funds historically have come from federal and state fuel taxes instead. However, fuel taxes have remained the same for the past 20 years, plus vehicles have become more fuel-efficient. The county has filled the funding gap by using reserve funds, deferring maintenance and postponing projects. Road reserves will be depleted in 2015 and even the current maintenance may decrease unless the levy passes. It simply makes sense to invest in good maintenance.
   Please join me in voting for the road, street and bridge levy on May 20.
