Softball season ends for WRHS girls

With 9-7 tournament loss to Jerome

The softball season for Wood River High School wrapped up Tuesday with a 9-7 loss to the Jerome Tigers in the loser bracket of the Great Basin Conference 4A tournament at Twin Falls.

Wood River grabbed an early 4-1 lead over Jerome in the first inning as senior Cassidy Cooper delivered a three-run double. But Tiger pitcher Leslie Ploss tamed the No. 3-seeded Wolverines the rest of the way and scattered five hits.

Jerome, the No. 3 seed, had lost to Wood River three times this season by scores of 14-11, 10-0 and 16-5. But the Tigers came into the game with some momentum after eliminating No. 5-seeded Minico by a 7-1 score earlier Tuesday and kept playing solid defense.

Wood River, in contrast, didn’t help its cause with six errors in the field.

Hailey coach Dale Martin said afterward, “It’s hard to beat a team four times in a season, especially when you give up six unearned runs.”

Such lapses on defense were “our downfall all season against good teams,” the coach added. Martin said, “We were able to outscore lesser teams but against the better teams, we struggled. We’ve just got to shore up things on defense.

“We had our chances. We hit the ball hard especially in the seventh inning. But they (Jerome) made two great plays. If they hadn’t made the plays, we most likely would have won or tied the game.”

Adding Wood River hits were Ashley Hicks, Ciceley Peavey (2 walks), Shelby Cooper and Blair Radford (double). Starting pitcher Brittney Bradley (9-7) allowed only six hits and one earned run in four innings. Radford finished out the game in the circle for the Wolverines.

Wood River ended its season with a 16-9 record, scoring 230 runs (9.2 per game) and allowing 162 (6.5). The Wolverines were a combined 0-7 against the top two teams in the Great Basin Conference—Twin Falls and Canyon Ridge.

Twin Falls and Canyon Ridge played for the district championship and State 4A tournament seeding Thursday back on the Twin Falls field.

Also on Tuesday, Canyon Ridge lost 15-0 to Twin Falls in the winner bracket, and Canyon Ridge ended Jerome’s season by a 6-2 score.
